For the first time ever, it is to be the magnificent glass-roofed nave of the Grand Palais which will host the week-long Fencing World Championships. A prestigious setting for prestigious swordsmen, and indeed the French are strong in this sport. Around 800 fencers will pit themselves against each other, watched by thousands of spectators and around 40 referees. The last World Championships took place in Antalya (Turkey) and saw success in the mens section for Andrea Baldini (foil), Anton Avdeev (épée) Nicolas Limbach (sabre) and in the women's Aida Shanaeva (foil), Ludov Shutova (épée) and Mariel Zagunis (sabre). Frenchman Jean-Michel Lucenay, who holds the European championship title (épée), will be present for the home side to cheer on.Prepare to see the finest of swordsmanship in this spectacular setting.
